UNB, Dhaka:

In the wake of recent concerns regarding Russell’s Viper bites, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Samanta Lal Sen instructed the authorities concerned to maintain a sufficient stock of antivenom in all hospitals across the country.

He came up with the instruction at an urgent virtual meeting with civil surgeons, family planning officers, divisional directors, and directors of medical college hospitals from across the country on Saturday.

During the meeting, the health minister addressed the critical issue of snakebites and the availability of antivenom, focusing particularly on the threat posed by Russell’s Viper.

“I want to assure people that there is no need to panic about Russell’s Viper bites,” said the minister adding, “Our hospitals are well-stocked with the necessary antivenom. I have given explicit instructions to ensure that we never run out of antivenom.”

He said swift medical care is crucial in snakebite cases and taking patients to hospitals fast increases the chances of a full recovery through proper treatment.

The minister stressed the need for a comprehensive public awareness campaign to educate people about the urgency of timely medical treatment for snakebites.

“Raising awareness about snakebite treatment is crucial. We must all be vigilant and motivated to avoid any delays in getting patients to hospitals,” he said.

He also urged civil surgeons and health department officials and staff to collaborate closely with their local Members of Parliament to enhance the effectiveness of these initiatives.

Health Services Division Secretary Md Jahangir Alam and Prof Dr Rubeda Amin, Director of the Directorate General of Health Services were present at the time with the minister.
