Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Tuesday said prison security and the protection of inmates’ human rights must go hand in hand in the modern global context.

Speaking as the chief guest at the passing-out parade of the 63rd batch of female prison guards at the Prison Training Centre in Kashimpur, Gazipur, he said ensuring the fundamental human rights of prisoners and rehabilitating them as reformed citizens was a responsibility of the state.

Humane treatment, fair facilities, non-discrimination and social dignity for inmates, he added, were not only legal obligations but also reflected the moral standing of the state.

The adviser described prisons as a sensitive and integral part of the criminal justice system, stressing that a transparent, accountable and non-discriminatory prison administration was essential for crime control, rehabilitation and social reintegration. He expressed optimism that newly trained guards would uphold professionalism, integrity and patriotism in discharging their duties.

Warning against corruption, he said it was the biggest enemy of the state, eroding institutions from within and undermining public trust. No prison official, he said, should serve vested interests, as they were public servants paid by taxpayers and bound to work for public welfare alone.

The adviser inspected the parade and distributed awards among outstanding female prison guards. Trainees also showcased various physical drills and displays during the ceremony.
