350 metric tonnes of furnace oil, looted from an oil tanker in Munshiganj on January 10, was recovered by the naval police from Char Salimabad Bhooter Morh Kheyaghat area in the Jamuna river under Chowhali upazila of Sirajganj district on Friday last.
During the drive, police also arrested five people in this connection and seized the bulkhead used for transporting of the furnace oil, said Arif Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Naval Police Outpost in Chowhali.
The arrested are Sumon Sheikh, 23, son of Abdul Hanif of Sarak Gachhiya village, Riaz Khan, 22, son of Chand Ali Khan of Khagbuniya village, Ferdaus Hassain, 22, and Amzad Hossain Topu, 26, son of Delwar Hossain of Lakurtola village in Barguna district, Islam Bepari, 39, son of Abdul Bepari of Char Dhalleshwari village in Narayanganj.
Arif Hossain further said, the pirates took away the furnace oil making hostage to six workers of OT Bin Jaman-1 vessel from the estuary of Dhaleshwari-Shitalakshya River in Munshiganj district on January 10.
Acting on a tip off, a team of naval police led by Addl. DIG Alamgir Hossain conducted the drive and recovered the furnace oil. The police also seized the bulkhead used in transporting of the fuel.
