As the nation continues to recover from last month’s devastating floods, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a warning of potential short-term flooding in certain northern, northeastern, and southeastern regions due to heavy monsoon rains this month.

However, overall rainfall across the country is expected to remain within typical levels for September, according to the BMD.

“One or two low-pressure systems may develop over the Bay of Bengal this month, with the possibility that one of these could intensify into a monsoon depression,” the Met office noted.

Rainfall predictions for September indicate that the Sylhet division may receive between 365mm and 450mm of rain, Chattogram 285mm to 350mm, Rangpur 375mm to 460mm and Rajshahi 285mm to 345mm. Other regions, including Khulna, Barishal, Dhaka and Mymensingh, are expected to receive between 250mm and 385mm of rainfall.

The forecast was shared during a meeting of the BMD’s expert committee on long-term weather predictions on Monday.

Notably, in August, Bangladesh experienced 46.2% more rainfall than usual, with the national average for the month typically being 612mm over 22 days. The highest rainfall recorded in the last 24 hours was 276mm in the Maijdee Court area of Noakhali.
