The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has been assigned to investigate the case involving the alleged abetment of suicide of Marium Khatun, the second wife of Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam.

The case documents were officially handed over to the DB from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on Tuesday (September 22), confirmed Monirul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

According to OC Monirul Islam, the decision to transfer the investigation was finalized on Monday night. “The case file was officially handed over to the DB on Tuesday,” he stated.

The transfer follows a court order issued on Monday granting police a four-day remand for MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and a one-day remand for his first wife, Maksuda Islam. Following the remand order, both were taken into custody at the DB office for questioning.

On the evening of September 20, police recovered the hanging body of 19-year-old Marium Khatun from a flat in NAM Bhavan No. 5, located opposite the Parliament Building. The flat belonged to Gazi Nazrul, where he resided with both his wives. Police broke open the door of one of the rooms to recover Marium’s body.

On the night of the incident, Marium’s father, S.M. Masum Billah, filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station alleging abetment of suicide. The named accused in the case are MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, his first wife Maksuda Islam, and Marium’s maternal uncle Obaydour Rahman. Police confirmed that Obaydour Rahman remains absconding.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), Marium’s father alleged that his eldest daughter married Gazi Nazrul last June due to direct instigation by her uncle, Obaydour. Following the marriage, Marium moved into Flat No. 203 of NAM Bhavan with Gazi Nazrul and Maksuda.

The statement further revealed that Marium had frequently informed her family over the phone about experiencing continuous physical and mental torture inflicted by Gazi Nazrul and Maksuda since the marriage.

The plaintiff stated that around 5:30 PM on the day of the incident, Gazi Nazrul called him via telephone, asking him to come to the apartment immediately. Upon arrival, he discovered his daughter hanging.

A suicide note was recovered from Marium’s bed during the retrieval of her body, the FIR noted. The case statement suggests that Marium likely took her own life between 3:00 PM and 5:30 PM on Sunday.

Detectives from the DMP’s Detective Branch are now conducting the formal probe into the incident.
