A Bangladeshi national was shot to death allegedly by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along Panchagarh border on Friday.

The incident took place early in the morning at the main pillar no 751 along Mominpara border under Panchagarh Sadar Upazila and Shingpara border of India.

The victim was identified as Anwar, 40, son of Rafiqul Islam of Debnagar area under Tentulia upazila in the district.

According to BGB and locals, Anwar went to India late Thursday night with a few others to fetch cows. On Friday morning, while they were returning with cows, BSF members chased them inside the Indian border. At that time, locals heard several rounds of gunfire.

Meanwhile, upon hearing the gunshots and to deter the smugglers, members of the BGB camp in Panchagarh also fired eight blank rounds. Later, the BSF took Anwar’s body from the scene.

Nilphamari 56 BGB Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Sheikh Md Badruddoza said, “We will strongly protest against the incident. The process of bringing back the body through a flag meeting is underway.”

After the incident, a smuggled Indian cow was seized from the border area of Bangladesh.
