TDS Desk:
The National Identity Registration Act, 2023 has been repealed to keep the NID registration process under the jurisdiction of the Election Commission.
Director General of the National Identity Registration Wing of the Election Commission ASM Humayun Kabir confirmed this information on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Ahmed sent a letter to the cabinet secretary, requesting the repeal of the Act.
The previous Awami League government enacted a law in 2023 to transfer the NID registration process from the Election Commission to the Security Services Division under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
This law, titled National Identity Registration Act, 2023, stipulated that until the government issued a gazette notification for the transfer, the NID operations would remain under the EC. Accordingly, the NID registration process has still been under the EC’s jurisdiction.
Interim government advisers, civil society members, and the public had been demanding that the NID registration process remain under the Election Commission and the Act be repealed.
