The government on Thursday published a gazette notification banning the politics of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir for their direct and indirect involvement in anti-state subversive activities.

The Ministry of Home Affairs issued the gazette notification this afternoon.

There is evidence that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir were involved in the recent riot and killing spree directly and they influenced the student movement, stated that gazette notification.

The government believes that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Chhatra Shibir and their all associate and front bodies are involved in subversive activities.

The government announced Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Chhatra Shibir and their all affiliate bodies as banned organisations in light of the section 18(1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act 2009, according to the gazette.

From now on, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Chhatra Shibir, and their all affiliate bodies have been enlisted as banned entities, added the gazette.

The order will come into effect immediately, added the gazette.

On 29 July, the leaders of the Awami League-led 14-party alliance strongly recommended banning the politics of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, for their involvement in anti-state activities.

In October 2018, the Election Commission revoked the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami, making it clear that the party would not be able to contest in the subsequent national election.

Besides, the Bangladesh Supreme Court on 1 August 2013 cancelled the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami, ruling that the party is unfit to contest the national election.
