Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Water Resources Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today said that all types of polythene bags will be banned from November 1 and these bags cannot be given to any customers. Raids will also be conducted in raw markets and polythene manufacturing factories.

She said while inaugurating the clean-up program and distribution of alternative materials in the capital’s Mohammadpur on Tuesday (September 24) afternoon to enforce the ban on the use of polythene.

“Anti-polythene activities will be started only with the campaign. The time for being cautious and strict is over,” said Syeda Rizwana Hasan.

She said that the date had been decided after talking to the traders. Hopefully, no campaign will be conducted to stop the use of polythene.

Mentioning that polythene use is harmful to the environment, the Adviser said that the level of damage by polythene has been proven globally. “Jute, cloth, and paper can be used as alternatives to polythene,” she added.

Earlier on September 9, the Environmental Adviser said that from October 1, no polyethylene shopping bags and polypropylene bags could be kept in supershops and could not be given to customers. Jute and cloth bags will be placed alternatively at or in front of all supershops for customers to purchase.
