Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detained more than 50 leaders and activists of the Awami League, whose activities are banned, from the main office of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasad) in the capital’s Gulistan on Saturday.

The detainees were taken into custody after police raided the Jasad office around 2:30pm on Saturday.

Police said they conducted the raid after receiving information that Awami League leaders and activists were holding a secret meeting at the Jasad headquarters.

DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) and spokesperson Md Akter Hossain confirmed the matter, saying more than 50 people had been detained from Gulistan on suspicion of involvement in banned activities.

“The detainees were being screened and their identities verified,” he said.

Earlier, two consecutive cocktail explosions took place in front of a footwear showroom on Road 27 in Dhanmondi around 12:15pm.

Police later detained four people from the scene.
