Remittances or expatriate income constitute a vital engine of emerging economies in the modern world. Remittance is far more than necessary for underdeveloped nations, especially during financial crises. Bangladesh is not an anomaly in this regard. Our economy is heavily reliant on remittance. According to different unofficial sources, currently about 15.7 million Bangladeshis are working in 176 different countries, and they sent about $21.61 billion in 2023.

But sadly, we have not yet been able to give proper status to these remittance fighters. They endure a variety of forms of harassment before, during and following their trip. From higher ticket costs to the immigration process, they face thousands of problems at the airport. Even the families of the workers who died in exile have to face inhumane conditions to bring the bodies back home.

These migrant combatants served as a buffer amid the nation’s economic downturn. In particular, expatriate income serves as essential for navigating challenges like the prevailing currency crisis. So, it is not possible to take the country forward without them. However, the majority of their demands have not yet been met, despite the fact that certain social groups have stepped forward to advocate for their wellbeing. The ‘Remittance Fighters’ organisation has put forward ten demands submitted by expatriates, which include the introduction of an online voting system, the issuance of remittance certificates, the rationalisation of visas and tickets and financial assistance for business ventures back home.

Since the formation of the interim government, various quarters have been raising their demands. The rights and dignity of the migrant workers have not been fully restored yet, though. It is impossible to forget their contribution during the anti-discrimination student movement. They declared not to send money and put pressure on the then government. Many of the migrants who turned to the streets even ended up in jail. So, giving heroic patriots the respect they deserve is a modern-day requirement.

Meeting these remittance fighters’ demands is not only essential today but also an ethical obligation. They deserve attention and assistance. We need to stand by them to expedite the nation’s growth. It is the time to acknowledge the diaspora’s accomplishments and take appropriate action in their honour. We can ensure a more affluent future by granting their desires and restoring their dignity.
