Sirajganj Govt Degree College allegedly turns to gambling den

Allegation has surfaced that a section of teachers at Sirajganj Government Degree College led by its incumbent principal Mohidul Hasan has turned the district’s largest educational institute into a gambling den instead of providing educations to the students.

Widespread criticism over the incident has sparked among the Netizen and even civil society members after some photos of the teachers’ gambling went viral through the social media-‘facebook’ recently.

Seeking anonymity, some teachers, employees and students said that, a section of teachers under the leadership of its principal Mohidul Hasan stay busy in playing cards (gambling) in exchange of money at the college rooms deceiving classes regularly that hampers academic activities in the college. Due to their unethical activities at the educational institution, students are being deprived of academic and ethical learning.

It was found in the photos published on the facebook that, Principal of the college Prof. Mohidul Hasan, Assistant Professor Ripon Mian, Rasel Babu Khaza, Mazharul Islam, Professor Rejaul Haque, Hazrat Ali and Hasimul Islam Biplob were playing game with cards in a room of the college.

While contacted, terming the card game into an ‘Intramural Competition’ for the college teachers, Principal Mohidul Hasan on Wednesday said, “It is not illegal, but rather legal in all educational institutions, just like playing chess. We have arranged a gaming competition in the college for our teachers. Because teachers have no scope to take part in another game in the college to keep their bodies and minds healthy and sound. This is why, they can take part in playing of cards. Not only that all female teachers and students have been allowed and invited to play card with them.”

He also declined the allegation of playing card in exchange of money. To cover-up the allegations and make their claim believable, a notice signed by Professor AKM Rejaul Haque was issued on Wednesday (June 10) to clarify about the photos of the facebook. In the notice, they claimed that, the views of the photos were parts of their ‘Intramural Competition’.
