Road crashes kill five in Sirajganj, Gazipur, Jashore

Five people were killed in road accidents in Sirajganj, Gazipur, and Jashore last night and on Sunday.

In Sirajganj, at least three people were killed, and four others injured when a speeding truck collided with a three-wheeler at Bhuiyagati in Raiganj upazila on Dhaka-Bogura highway, last night. The deceased have been identified as Shushanto Kumar Das, 55, of Ghurka village; Md Mirajul Islam, 12, of Degholbari village in Ullapara upazila; and Motaleb Hossain, 30, of Raiganj upazila in Sirajganj.

Officer-in-charge of Hatikumrul Highway Police Station, Md Abdur Rouf said that a three-wheeler carrying 7-8 people, traveling from Bhuiyagati to Ghurka, was hit by a Bogura-bound truck near the Palli Biddut sub-station around 8:30pm.

Three people died on the spot while four others were injured, the OC said.

Vehicle movement on Dhaka-Bogura highway got suspended for a while following the accident.

In Jashore Sadar upazila, a hotelier was killed after being hit by a speeding motorcycle in Bagerhat Bazar, last night.

The deceased was identified as Abu Bakkar, 50, from Hajir Ali village in the upazila, said Jashore Kotwali Police Station OC Abul Hasnat.

The deceased’s relative Ramzan Ali said that Abu visited his uncle Omar Ali’s house at Karichia village yesterday morning.

A motorcycle hit him from behind in Bagerhat Bazar around 9:00pm, leaving him severely injured.

Later, locals rescued him and took him to Jashore General Hospital, where he was declared dead later.

The OC said that police rushed to the spot and sent the body to Jashore General Hospital for autopsy. Legal proceedings are underway, he added.

In Gazipur, a pedestrian was killed after being hit by an unidentified vehicle in the Asia Pump area of Tongi on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway around 10:00am on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Arun Kumar Mallick, 75, from the Bara Deora area of Tongi, Tongi West Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Iskander Habibur Rahman confirmed.

According to police and local sources, an unidentified vehicle hit Arun when he was crossing the road. Locals took him to Tongi Government Hospital, where he died later.

Confirming the incident, the OC said, “Legal action is being taken in this regard.”
