A four-month-old boy was rescued by police on Friday after his mother sold him to a childless couple on Thursday.

According to police, Rabiul informed them that his wife, Laboni Akter Liza, had sold their infant son. The couple were having disputes due to Rabiul’s financial struggles.

When questioned by police, Laboni admitted to selling her four-month-old son, Tamim, to a childless couple for Tk 40,000 through the mediation of a third person on April 10. She also confessed to purchasing a mobile phone and some imitation jewellery with part of the money.

Emranul Kabir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Madhupur Police Station, said that after interrogating Laboni, a police team recovered the baby early today from a childless couple in neighbouring Bhuapur upazila.

“The rescued baby and both couples are currently in police custody,” the OC said.

Family members of both Laboni and Rabiul have been called to the police station to decide on the custody of the child, he added.
