The final draft memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran includes an immediate Iranian commitment to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to all commercial vessels in exchange for Washington lifting its naval blockade on Iranian ports, Reuters reported.
The official said that a final deal is expected to be negotiated within 60 days following formal agreement by both sides on the current draft.
According to the Iranian source, the draft memorandum outlines a series of reciprocal steps.
On maritime security, Iran has committed to immediately reopening the Strait of Hormuz to all commercial vessels, while the United States would lift its naval blockade on Iranian ports in return.
In the financial realm, the US has reportedly agreed not to impose any new sanctions on Iran until a final deal is reached. The draft also includes a US commitment to waive oil sanctions for a specified period, allowing Tehran to sell crude and receive revenue.
Furthermore, Washington would release $25 billion of Iran’s frozen assets through a combination of direct cash transfers, cooperation among regional countries, and financial credit lines.
On the nuclear issue, Tehran agrees that it will neither produce nor acquire nuclear weapons. Until a final deal is struck, the draft states that Iran will maintain the nuclear status quo by refraining from uranium enrichment and avoiding any expansion of its nuclear facilities.
The US, for its part, agrees that Tehran will dilute its existing stockpile of highly enriched uranium inside Iran, with the specific mechanism for doing so to be negotiated within the 60-day window following the preliminary agreement.
Iran has not yet officially announced a final decision regarding a proposed memorandum put forward during ongoing negotiations, a source close to the Iranian negotiating team told Fars News Agency.
The source said that the review of the political, legal, and technical dimensions of the proposals continues at both expert and decision-making levels. “The Islamic Republic of Iran has not yet made or declared its final decision on the proposed memorandum discussed in the negotiation process,” the informed source told Fars.
According to the source, relevant authorities were conducting a thorough assessment of all aspects of the proposals, emphasizing that Tehran’s stance would be based solely on national interests, the preservation of red lines, and the receipt of necessary guarantees. The source further stressed that Iran would not be swayed by media hype or psychological operations when it comes to any potential agreement. “No decision will be influenced by media campaigns,” the source added.
Iran’s final position, the source reiterated, would only be announced once all relevant considerations had been fully evaluated.
Separately, Tasnim News Agency reported that a Qatari delegation had traveled to Tehran to review the latest developments related to the diplomatic process and consult with Iranian officials.
