Professor Tapan Kumar Sarkar, Chairman of Dhaka Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board, has announced his resignation following student protests demanding the re-evaluation of HSC and equivalent examination results.

According to reports from different media, Professor Sarkar has to submit his resignation to the Ministry of Education on October 21. He also stated that the students’ demands will be forwarded to the ministry.

The resignation announcement came after several students were reportedly injured in a clash at the Dhaka Education Board premises earlier Sunday. Students from the ‘HSC-Batch 2024’ were protesting, calling the recently released HSC results “discriminatory.”

Witnesses stated that the protests turned violent when some board staff allegedly attacked the demonstrators. Four injured students were taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

In response, Professor Sarkar claimed that the protest was led by students who failed their exams. He noted that some students may have been injured while vandalizing rooms at the education board.

The protests follow the release of HSC results on October 15, which many students deemed unfair, particularly regarding the evaluation method. The demonstrators are calling for the results to be re-evaluated and mapped across all subjects.

Students had earlier gathered at the Central Shaheed Minar before marching toward the education board, where the altercation occurred.
