The Indian High Commission in Dhaka has paid tribute to former president Ziaur Rahman, recalling his role during Bangladesh’s Liberation War and reaffirming India’s solidarity with the people of Bangladesh.

In a message issued on Friday marking the death anniversary of Zia, the mission said Bangladeshis were gathering in memory of “one of the nation’s bravest sons”.

The statement recalled the erstwhile major’s radio address in March 1971, saying it had “electrified the masses, inspired them on a path of resistance against oppression and led to national liberation”.

The high commission also highlighted the shared history between Bangladesh and India during the Liberation War.

“Today, as then, India stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Bangladesh in a saga of shared sacrifices and a common journey towards progress and prosperity of both our peoples,” it said.

On May 30, 1981, the then president Ziaur Rahman was shot dead by a group of soldiers at the Chittagong Circle House. BNP observes the occasion as “Martyrdom Day”.

The BNP flag has been flying at half-mast at the party’s central offices in Naya Paltan, the chairman’s office in Gulshan and party offices across the country since the morning. The national flag and a black flag of mourning have also been hoisted.
