The government has appointed new vice-chancellors (VCs) in 4 universities in the country. The universities are Chattogram University, Jagannath University, Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur and Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University in Mymensingh.

They were appointed in a gazette issued by the Secondary and Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education on Wednesday. According to the order of the President, these announcements were signed by the Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Education Shahinur Islam.

According to the notification, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yahya Akhtar has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Chattogram University (CU). He is a retired professor of the university’s political science department. He has been temporarily appointed to this post. His appointment will be effective from the date of joining.

Jagannath University (JnU) has appointed its retired professor of the social work department Md. Rezaul Karim as the Vice-Chancellor for the next four years.

Dhaka University (DU) Professor of Applied Mathematics Md. Shaukat Ali has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor of Rangpur’s Begum Rokeya University (BRUR) for the next four years from the date of joining.

In a separate notification, Md Jahangir Alam, a professor from Dhaka University’s sociology department, was appointed as the VC of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University in Mymensingh. His appointment will be for a term of four years, effective from the date of his joining, said the notification.

After former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on August 5 amid an anti-discrimination student uprising, the vice-chancellors of the country’s public universities, who were appointed politically faced the wrath of students. Some voluntarily and others resigned in the face of a student protest ultimatum. As a result, 45 government universities in the country became without vice-chancellors. To eliminate that situation, the interim government is appointing vice-chancellors in all universities.
